UNDERSTANDING YOUR BILL

The Parts of Your Gas Bill

Customer Charge
A basic service charge that covers the cost of billing, meter reading, underground pipelines and equipment. It is the same amount no matter how much gas you use.

Distribution Charge
The charge for delivering gas to your home or business from the point where interstate pipelines connect with our pipelines. This charge is based on how much gas you use.

Gas Cost Adjustment
The amount we bill or credit to your account for differences between projected and actual gas costs for the previous year’s gas supply.

Gas Supply Charge
We buy all of the gas our customers use. This charge is the amount we pay for gas and the cost of delivering it to us by interstate pipelines. We are not allowed to make a profit on this charge, and we may adjust it quarterly to reflect changes in gas prices.

State Tax Adjustment Surcharge
A charge that reflects changes in rates for state taxes already included on your bill.

Tracking Your Gas Usage
Your monthly gas bill gives you a convenient way to keep track of how much gas you use. On the front of the bill is a chart that shows your gas use in dekatherms. The chart shows data for 13 months, so you can see how your gas use varies by season. If you have gas heat, most of your use will be in the winter.
If you do not see a bar, it means that you used less than 1 dekatherm during that month. The chart is not able to show gas use of less than a dekatherm. By comparing the first and last bars in the chart, you can see changes in your gas use from the same month a year ago. Those changes may be a result of the weather, additional gas appliances or your efforts to save energy.

What is a Dekatherm?
Your gas bill is based on the number of dekatherms you use each month. A dekatherm is a measure of heat energy equal to 1 million British Thermal Units (BTU). One BTU is roughly the amount of energy released by one match.

One dekatherm can:
• Fuel your furnace for 10 hours
• Run a gas light for 720 hours
• Operate a gas fireplace for 33 hours on high setting
• Dry 72 loads of laundry
• Cook 23 turkeys
